EFFECT OF CHURNA PINDA SWEDAM ON POST CHICKUN GUNYA ARTHRALGIA

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND

Chickun gunya- a disabling disease of common man, created havoc in southern India in the recent past. Nearly 12 lakh cases of chickungunya have been reported from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh(1).

Chickun gunya is caused by Alpha Arbovirus presents with high grade fever which varies up to a week or two, followed by arthralgia, myalgia and joint swelling which make him disabling. Fever is sometimes associated with skin rashes, headache, insomnia and ocular symptoms etc.

Dandakajwara(2), a kind of Sannipata Jwara (Kaphavata Pradhana) presents with fever and severe pain in Asthi and Sandis which doesn’t get relived even after the subsidence of fever simulates to Post Chickun gunya Arthralgia.

Swedana is the ideal treatment for both vata and kapha in terms of pain and joint swelling(3).Churna Pinda Sweda is a rooksha sweda which helps to dry up the excess water content of the body(4). Kottam Chukkadi Churna and Jadamayadi Churna(5) have vatahara property.

Considering the above factors, a clinical study was taken up to evaluate the efficacy of Churna Pinda Swedam (CPS) in Post Chickun gunya Arthralgia.

OBJECTIVES
  1. To study the effect of Kottamchukkadi CPS in Poost Chickun gunya Arthralgia.
  2. To study the effect Jadamayadi CPS in Post Chickun gunya Arthralgia.
  3. To compare the effect of Kottamchukkadi and Jadamayadi CPS in Post Chickun gunya Arthralgia.

RESEARCH DESIGN

60 diagnosed cases of Chikun gunya who have developed Arthralgia but with no fever, within the age group of 20-50yrs were selected for the study from OPD & IPD of Amrita School of Ayurveda, Kollam, and were randomly divided in to 2 groups.

Treatment Groups
  • KCPS group: The patients of this group were subjected to CPS with Kottamchukkadi Churna for 7 days.
  • JCPS group: The patients of this group were subjected to CPS with Jadamayadi Churna for 7 days.
The Pindas were changed every 3rd day except for the last set. The whole process was done for 45min and the Sweda was applied in all the 7 postures.

Gandharvahastadi Kashaya in the dose of 15ml was administered at bed time for the purpose kosta shuddhi.

RESULTS:

  • KCPS group: Reduction in pain (83%) and swelling (66%) was found statistically significant. Walking time was increased by 73%.

  • JCPS group: statistically significant reduction was observed in the Swelling (76 %) and pain (72%). Walking time was improved by 69%.

CONCLUSION:

Kottamchuckadi CPS was effective in reliving pain and Jadamayadi CPS is effective in reducing the swelling in Post Chickun gunya Arthralgia patients.

hello sir,
can u explain how churna in the pottali relives in the symptoms in this disease... because there is'nt any absorption of the drug in this procedure (churna pinda sweda). if the heat applied in the procedure is the reason for the relief then mere valuka sweda can do this instead of churna pinda sweda

Dear Sandeep
Of course there is the absorption of veerya of the churna in CPS. It is verymuch evident from the explanation in Sushrutha Samhitha.
* Su Sa Sha 9/8-9
* Su Sa Su 18/4
So it is clear that it is not only the heat effect but also the drug effect

We had applied Valuka sweda also to the these pts, but it agravated the symptoms in pitta pradhana condition.
